The Flotation Experience
Welcome to a wonderful world free of physical, mental, and emotional stress.
Float effortlessly in a gravity free environment.
History of the Floatation Tank:
Floatation REST, (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) was developed in 1954 by Professor Dr. John C. Lilly, a neurophysiologist, at the National Institutes of Mental Health in Bethesda Maryland. Dr. Lilly was intrigued by the question of the origins of conscious activity within the brain and whether the brain needed external stimuli to keep its conscious states active. Dr. Lilly determined that gravity, light, temperature, and sound, made up 85% of all central nervous system activity. Dr. Lilly devised a system, using buoyant salt water which allowed one to float effortlessly on ones back in an enclosed chamber that would restrict environmental stimulation as much as was practical and feasible. Floating enables individuals to effortlessly experience very deep levels of relaxation.
Floating Facts...
Most people float in their birthday suit; others choose a swimsuit. To float, you step into one very large, light-blue, egg-shaped vessel, 4 1/2 feet high, 5 1/2 feet wide and 9 feet long, containing 200 gallons of water, 15” deep with 1,200 pounds of Epsom salt dissolved in it. We use Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) in the tank for buoyancy because it is soothing and non-irritating. The 30% concentration of salt makes the water so dense that the user floats to the surface and as unable to sink. It is a very unique experience, not since birth have you been in such a completely safe and nurturing environment. As you float, totally relaxed in this calm, peaceful, quiet, dark place, you are cradled, caressed, and suspended by warm water at 93.5 F (skin temperature, not internal body temperature). 93.5F is the temperature at which most people will feel neither hot nor cold. When all other distractions have been eliminated, a person can become very sensitive to temperature. The air and water temperature in the
Why Float?
The Tank is a useful for the reduction of stress, this occurs by promoting deep relaxation and increasing stress-tolerance. Stress-tolerance means that a stimulus that acted as a stressor before floating no longer leads to stress afterwards. Floating facilitates the synchronization of the right/left brain hemispheres which enhances intuition, promotes imagination, motivation, and creativity. By isolating the outer-world, we facilitate entry into our “inner worlds” and holographic thinking. Floating improves athletic performance and speeds up the healing process by decreasing the production of lactic acid and adrenaline while increasing the production of endorphins. And, it is just plain fun!
First Float:
Stepping into the warm water, you sit or lie down and naturally float to the surface, effortlessly. As you lay back the water caresses your body and hold you on the surface. It is safe to fall asleep in the tank. Even people, who report they never sleep on their backs in bed, sleep floating on their backs in the tank. The tank provides a plentiful supply of air that is constantly renewed by an air ionizing circulation system. The water is filtered in the morning and after each floater, and sterilized by the use of an UV filtering system. It takes only a few minutes to acclimate to a totally stress-free environment. Floating allows the mind rest, relaxation, and meditation. The stiller you are in the tank the more body awareness disappears. Enjoy the sensation, relax, breathe, and let go. Floating begins your journey into Self-exploration, relaxation, health, wellness, and discovery. Your flotation experience continues even after you leave the tank.
